Men’s health, year-end benefits and understanding GLP-1 coverage
Which health conversation have you been putting off? November brings men’s health into focus through Movember, but it is also a useful reminder for everyone to pause, ask questions and understand the support available through their benefits plan. Before the year ends, a little preparation can help turn good intentions into practical next steps.
Make time for the conversation
A concern does not have to become a crisis before it deserves attention. Changes in mood, sleep, stress or physical health are worth discussing with a qualified health professional. A useful starting point is to write down what has changed, how long it has been happening and any questions you want to ask.
For employers, Movember can open a broader conversation about access to care. Remind employees how to find mental health supports, virtual care or an Employee and Family Assistance Program, where available. Share the contact details and explain how to access these services privately.
Screening should reflect the person
Preventive care is not a checklist of every available test. Age, personal and family history, symptoms and individual risk all help guide appropriate care. Ask your provider which screenings or assessments are relevant to you and when they should take place.
Prostate-specific antigen testing is one example where an informed discussion matters. PSA screening has potential benefits and harms, including false-positive results and finding cancers that may never cause problems. Discuss these trade-offs with your provider. New or persistent symptoms should be assessed rather than left until a routine screening visit.
Review your benefits before year end
A year-end check is about understanding your coverage and arranging appropriate care. Start with your benefits booklet or member portal and confirm four details:
- Remaining coverage: Check dental, vision, paramedical and mental health balances, including reimbursement percentages and provider eligibility.
- Spending accounts: Confirm whether unused Health Spending Account or Wellness Spending Account funds expire or carry forward. Their rules and eligible expenses may differ.
- Claim deadlines: Distinguish the deadline for incurring an expense from the deadline for submitting the claim.
- Prescriptions: Check upcoming renewals and any special authorization expiry dates. Allow time for the required paperwork.
Do not assume every plan resets on January 1 or that an unused balance guarantees reimbursement. Confirm the rules before booking care or making a purchase.
Look beyond the GLP-1 headlines
GLP-1 medications have attracted attention for weight management, but their role and coverage require a more careful conversation. Health Canada has authorized prescription products in this area for type 2 diabetes and obesity. The approved use depends on the specific product. A qualified prescriber should assess suitability, potential side effects and ongoing follow-up. Obtain prescription medication from a licensed pharmacy.
Medical suitability and benefits coverage are separate questions. A prescription does not automatically mean a plan will reimburse it. Coverage may depend on the exact medication, the condition being treated, plan exclusions and clinical criteria. Some drugs require special authorization, with information submitted by the prescribing professional for the insurer’s review.
Before filling a new prescription, ask the insurer or benefits provider what is covered, which documents are needed and what your share of the cost would be. If a request is declined, ask for the reason and discuss next steps with your prescriber and insurer.
Give employees a clearer starting point
For employers, the practical question is whether employees understand the plan well enough to use it. Review recurring questions, explain authorization requirements and consider emerging drug costs alongside employee access and long-term plan sustainability. Keep communication respectful and avoid assumptions about why someone needs treatment.
